Content Stealer - Data?
Friday 27 April 2007, 13:11
I seem to have lost all my content stealer images,
where are they saved and any idea if or how I could get them back.
I'd also like to set it up so they're all just saved as .jpg's or .png's when they're stolen in a dir of my choice.
is that possible?

I'm primarily talking about DP's - they were showing up in the StuffPlug stolen content window - I had a ton of DP's showing up in there, now they've all gone
Are these auto saved anywhere? Where does it cache this to show it?

StuffPlug itself doesn't actually cache the images, it just accesses messenger's cache. If the content is gone, messenger's caching system removed it. There is no way to get it back, sorry...

As a feature request then could I suggest it caches it itself?
We're adding the add-on primarily to get stuff like this so it'd make sense if the app we use to get this content actually keeps a copy of it securely and doesn't rely on MSN.
Thanks

I know what you did. You must have done a Ad-aware / CCleaner / Spybot search and destroy scan.
All of these programs clear your messenger cache etc.

And on another note, it would be useful if outgoing data was put in the content stealer too. That may seem pointless but if you are backing up all of you're emoticons to seperate files it saves a lot of hassle. (As apposed to having to log onto another account using polygamy and sending all your content to them so you can then save it to file.)

It would certainly be possible to copy all DPs and Winks received and sent through messenger, but I consider that to be a waste of disk space.
The index file for the cache already keeps growing to huge filesizes, and I'm afraid that if each and every DP/Wink was copied you'd end up with a few GB directory that you would never really look at anyway.

Not to mention the fact that the huge amount of stolen content would no doubt probably crash the poor program once it's requested. lol...

Stuff Plug doesn't store anything.... Messenger does.
Look in your C:\Windows\Temp\MessengerCache folder.
You'll see tons of files with no extensions, but they are actually your contacts DPs. Rename the files to have a .gif extension and you'll get your images.
Its best to copy the files to another folder and then use a tool like Better File Rename to rename them all for you.
If you're looking into your own DPs, emoticons, backgrounds, etc. look into your
C:\Documents and Settings\<Your Username>\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Messenger\<Your Email>\ObjectStore
There you'll see folders for each type of content you're looking for. Inside you'll see some files. Some end with ".id2" extension and others with ".dt2". You can ignore the id2 ones cause i think they are like some sort of index. The dt2 ones are the ones you may be looking for.
Rename the files to their respective extenstion:
background files to .jpg
custom emoticons to .gif
dynamic backgrounds to .cab
winks to .cab
voice files im not sure, maybe wav or mp3...
Hope this is useful for anyone.
P.S.: If someone has some pacience for this, i think it may be possible to create our own dynamic display pictures in flash and have some way to put them in messenger. I look into this sometime ago, but i couldn't do it.
